Kali Puja 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November, on the Amavasya night of Kartik, the same night as Diwali. While most of India lights lamps for Lakshmi, Bengal, Assam and Odisha keep vigil through the dark hours for the Mother who dances upon time itself.
There is a particular beauty in this coincidence. On the darkest night of the year, one half of the country turns to the goddess of light and fortune, and the other to the goddess of the dark. Both are right. Kali is not the opposite of Lakshmi but her deeper face: what remains when everything that can be taken has been.

Kali Puja is a night rite. Unlike most pujas it is performed in the middle of the night, during the Nishita Kaal, when Amavasya is at its deepest. The exact midnight window shifts by city because it depends on your local sunset and sunrise, so check a panchang for your own town rather than trusting a single India-wide figure.
Why Bengal Worships Kali on the Night of Diwali
The Kartik Amavasya is the darkest night of the lunar year. In the Shakta understanding this is not an absence to be feared but the ground of everything: the void from which creation rises and into which it returns. Kali is that void given a face.
The domestic form of Kali Puja as Bengal now keeps it is comparatively recent, taking shape in the eighteenth century under Raja Krishnachandra of Nadia and spreading through the nineteenth. But its roots are far older, in the Tantric lineages of eastern India and in the poet-saints who sang the Mother in plain Bengali. Ramprasad Sen addressed her as a child addresses a mother who is being difficult, and that intimacy is still the register in which Bengal speaks to Kali.
The nineteenth century deepened it further at Dakshineswar, where a young priest named Gadadhar wept before the image of Bhavatarini until she answered. You can read that story in our guide to Kalighat and Dakshineswar.
The Puja Vidhi, Step by Step
Kali Puja can be kept simply at a home altar or elaborately with a priest and full Tantric rites. What follows is the household form.
- Clean and prepare. The space is washed during the day, and an alpana drawn at the threshold and around the altar.
- Set the image. A murti or picture of Kali faces south or east, on a red cloth, with a ghee lamp and an oil lamp lit before her.
- Sankalp at nightfall. The intention is spoken aloud: for whom, and for what, the puja is being kept.
- Offer at midnight. The main worship falls in the Nishita Kaal. Red hibiscus above all, along with red cloth, sweets, fruit, rice, and a garland if you have one.
- Light the lamps. Fourteen lamps are lit on Bhoot Chaturdashi the night before, for the fourteen forebears; on Kali Puja night the lamps burn through until dawn.
- Chant. The beej mantra, the Kali Chalisa, or a Ramprasadi song. Sound is the offering that costs nothing and carries furthest.
- Aarti and prasad. The aarti closes the worship, and prasad is shared before anyone sleeps.
Animal sacrifice is still performed at some traditional Bengali temples on this night. The overwhelming majority of household pujas today offer fruit, sweets and a symbolic red hibiscus or a cut pumpkin in its place.
Mantras for Kali Puja Night
The beej mantra below needs no initiation and is the one most householders carry into this night. The deeper Tantric mantras of Kali are given by a guru through diksha and are not printed here for that reason.
| Kali Beej Mantra | |
|---|---|
| Sanskrit | ॐ क्रीं कालिकायै नमः |
| Transliteration | Om Kreem Kalikayai Namah |
| Meaning | I bow to Kalika, who is the seed sound Kreem: the vibration of transformation, fierce compassion and dissolution. |
| Count | 108 repetitions, one mala, ideally at midnight facing south |
The Dakshina Kali dhyana mantra, the Kali Chalisa, and the songs of Ramprasad Sen are all traditional on this night. If you keep only one practice, keep the mala.
Kali Puja and Diwali on the Same Night
| Lakshmi Puja (most of India) | Kali Puja (Bengal, Assam, Odisha) | |
|---|---|---|
| Time of worship | Evening, at pradosh | Midnight, in the Nishita Kaal |
| Deity | Lakshmi, with Ganesha | Kali, as Shyama or Dakshina Kali |
| Mood | Light, welcome, abundance | Vigil, intensity, fearlessness |
| Offerings | Sweets, coins, lotus, kheel-batasha | Red hibiscus, red cloth, sweets, khichuri |
| Lamps | Rows of diyas at doors and windows | Lamps kept burning until dawn |
| Name of the night | Diwali, Deepavali | Shyama Puja, Kali Pujo |
The two are not in competition and many families keep both: Lakshmi at dusk for the household, Kali at midnight for the soul. Our complete Lakshmi Puja vidhi guide covers the evening rite in full.
